CAREER: RAND Summer Associate Positions (CA, DC,& Pittsburgh)

 

RAND Corporation is recruiting graduate student applicants for its 2010 Summer Associate program. RAND is a nonprofit institution that performs research and analysis on a wide variety of topics to inform decisions by policymakers. RAND Summer Associates put their research and analytical skills to use in a real world context that broadens exposure before graduation, provides valuable work experience, and also enables students to experience how research work is performed at RAND.  This program is generally open to applicants who have completed at least two years of their Ph.D. program, and who have not yet completed their Ph.D.  Please read the attached flyer and see the RAND website for details about program eligibility. Successful applicants to this competitive program are offered a paid summer internship at one of three RAND offices in the U.S.  Please see: http://www.rand.org/about/edu_op/fellowships/gsap/ for more information.

In particular, some technical expertise areas that are of interest to RAND right now include:

Structural engineering, specifically fracture mechanics, corrosion and damage tolerance
Communications and networking
Information science, especially integrating architectures
Information security
Military space technologies
Engineering related to sensor technologies

This is only a partial list of interest areas. Also, beyond technical areas, graduate students from a very wide variety of backgrounds will be considered for program, including those having non-technical training. Please feel free to forward this email to any of your friends or colleagues who may be interested in participating. Applications for the Summer Associate Program must be postmarked by January 15, 2010 to receive full consideration by the program.

P.S. RAND also hires new Ph.D. graduates into permanent research positions, and for 2-3 year term research assistant positions for new Masters or Bachelors degree recipients. Doctoral Dissertation Improvement Grants in the Directorate for Biological Sciences (DDIG)

The National Science Foundation awards Doctoral Dissertation Improvement Grants in selected areas of the biological sciences. These grants provide partial support of doctoral dissertation research to improve the overall quality of research. Allowed are costs for doctoral candidates to participate in scientific meetings, to conduct research in specialized facilities or field settings, and to expand an existing body of dissertation research.
