¥       Fellowship programs operated by U.S. federal agencies provide highly-qualified students with stipends that are higher than most assistantships and an Òeducational allowanceÓ that is used to pay tuition, travel to meetings and other research related expenses. Many of these programs seek to expand the participation of students from groups under-represented in the STEM fields. Examples of these programs are given below.

¥       Often-overlooked sources of fellowships are those provided by foreign governments to their citizens to pursue graduate studies in the U.S. The student must submit the application. Information on these programs can generally be found on that countryÕs embassy web site.

 

 

National Science Foundation

Graduate Research Fellowship Program

Students apply directly. Fellowships provide 3 years of support:

- $30,000 annual stipend

- $10,500 cost-of-education allowance

- $1,000 one time international travel allowance

- TeraGrid Supercomputer access

U.S. Department of Defense

National Defense Science and Engineering
Graduate (NDSEG) Fellowship Program



Students apply directly. The DoD will pay the Fellow's full tuition and required fees, stipend, and up to $1,000 in health insurance coverage.

-  A stipend is provided in the amount of $30,500 for the first year, $31,000 the second, and $31,500 the third. Stipends are prorated monthly based on a 12-month academic year.

-  Tuition and all required fees (not to include room and board) are provided.

There are no dependency or travel allowances.

Food and Agricultural Sciences National Needs Graduate and Postgraduate Fellowship Grants Program

 

Supports: (1) training students for Master's and doctoral degrees in food, agricultural and natural resource sciences, and; (2) Special International Study or Thesis/Dissertation Research Travel Allowances (IRTA) for eligible USDA NNF beneficiaries in USDA mission areas.

Office of Science Graduate Fellowship Program

 

Supports outstanding graduate students in basic research in areas of physics, biology, chemistry, mathematics, engineering, and computation relevant to the Office of Science. Students apply directly. Each fellow receives the following for three years:

- A yearly stipend of $35,000 for general living expenses.

- $10,500 towards college/university tuition and fees.

- $5,000 per year to use for research-related expenses.

- travel and accommodations for the annual DOE SCGF Research

Conference will be provided by the DOE SCGF program.

NASA

Graduate Student Researchers Program

 

Students apply directly. Fellowships are awarded for one year as training grants in the amount of $30,00 that includes:

- Student Allowance: $27,000 (Student Stipend-$20,000, Student Allowance Health Insurance (add to student stipend if not needed) $6,000 University Allowance: $1,000)

- $3,000 is paid to Faculty Advisor for PI Travel (At faculty advisorÕs discretion, allowance may be given to student.)

- Awards are renewable for 1 year for a MS degree, and 2 years for PhD, with maximum of three years funding.


RFP is released in January, proposal due in March.

Computational Science Graduate Fellowship

For students pursuing a PhD in scientific or engineering disciplines with an emphasis in high-performance computing. Students apply directly.

- Full tuition and required fees will be paid during the appointment period.


- A yearly stipend of $32,400.

- A $1,000 academic annual allowance for research expenses or the professional development of the fellow.

- Matching funds of up to $2,475 to provide computer support.
