Fellowship programs
operated by U.S. federal agencies provide highly-qualified students with
stipends that are higher than most assistantships and an Òeducational
allowanceÓ that is used to pay tuition, travel to meetings and other research
related expenses. Many of these programs seek to expand the participation of
students from groups under-represented in the STEM fields. Examples of these
programs are given below.
¥
Often-overlooked
sources of fellowships are those provided by foreign governments to their
citizens to pursue graduate studies in the U.S. The student must submit the
application. Information on these programs can generally be found on that
countryÕs embassy web site.
