South Dakota Center for Biocomplexity Studies
The South Dakota Center for Biocomplexity Studies (SDCBS) exists to promote integrated research in environmental systems. Biocomplexity stresses the
richness of biological systems and their capacity for adaptation and self-organizing behavior.
Biocomplexity in an environmental context emphasizes research with the following
characteristics: (a) a high degree of interdisciplinarity; (b) a focus on complex environmental
systems that includes non-human biota or humans; and (c) a focus on systems with high potential
for exhibiting non-linear behavior.

Professor
Carol A. Johnston is Director of the Center for
Biocomplexity Studies. Dr. Johnston came to South Dakota in July 2003 from the
University of Minnesota-Duluth, where she worked for 18 years at the Natural
Resources Research Institute. Johnston holds M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Soil
Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she studied how wetland
soils intercept pollutants from upstream dairy farms. Still active in research,
she has transferred federal grants to SDSU to study wetlands of the Great Lakes
coast, and landscape features that release organic matter into streams. Dr.
Johnston is a Certified Professional Soil Scientist and a Certified Professional
Wetland Scientist. She learned about biocomplexity at the National Science
Foundation (NSF), where she directed the Ecosystem Studies Program from 2000 to
2002. In addition to directing the South Dakota Center for Biocomplexity
Studies, Johnston is a Professor in the Department of Biology and Microbiology
at SDSU, and advises graduate students in the Atmospheric, Environmental, and
Water Resources (AEWR) Ph.D. program.
